It doesn’t matter how big or small your backyard is as it has one main purpose; a place to kick back and relax, unwind and just take a break. However, it seems that a lot of people who have yards in the back of their house might run away from it, rather than run to it. If you have a cluttered backyard or have yet to use this space to your advantage, you probably just need some ideas to help you realise the potential that your backyard possesses. And you’re in luck because there are quite a few ideas below on where to start!
Make the Elements Aesthetically Pleasing
First things first. All the overgrown trees, dead bushes, and weeds? They must go. And if you have been using your backyard as a storage space, tidy it up, get rid of anything in your garden that no longer belongs there; Starting with a blank canvas is the way to go.
Take Advantage of the Supreme Views You Have
If you have access to the sun setting, the sky, a landmark, the water, or anything else you can see from within your backyard – don’t block it, use it. This means that you should not be blocking views with trees or bushes. The backyard should seamlessly blend in with the environment, not prevent it or compete against it.
Add Some Shade and Protection
If you plan on hanging outside for long periods, make sure you add in some kind of protection from the wind and sun. You can do this in several ways from simple small umbrellas to more functional Pergolas, Awnings, and Verandas. These can be as big or small as you like and can be constructed into varying styles and types – it depends on what you want from your backyard and how much space you have.
Add Comfortable Seating!
Chairs are one thing, but if you really want your relaxing oasis, start thinking about loungers such as chaise lounges or lounge chairs, these allow you to not only sit upright but to stretch out, lay down, and genuinely relax to the max. While the size and design of the loungers’ matter, so does the actual softness of the couches and chairs, so make sure you are purchasing cushions that are comfortable to sit or lay down on for more than just a few minutes.
Add a Water Feature
Adding a swimming pool would be an amazing thing to add to your oasis, but some locations (weather) and some houses (space) cannot afford something so luxurious. If that’s the case, but you still want the calming effect that water offers, there are other water options to consider:
– A garden pond
– A fishpond, such as Koi
– A fountain
– A birdbath- A hot tub
– A wading pool
These are considerably less money than a pool and take up much less space.
Add Lighting and Warmth
Another option you may want to consider when building and designing your backyard is the key element of lighting and warmth. Outdoor lighting will allow you to light up certain parts of your backyard where you might experience the most activity i.e., the deck, the grilling area, or the lounging area. Warmth is going to include items to not only add literal warmth but the ambience. You can do this with firepits and fireplaces, as well as chimineas and fire lamps.
